Adventures in Arousing Alienation
I’ve been going non-stop lately — doing stuff with my family, rehearsing near-daily for a show, dealing with stressful stuff at work, working through a couple of things in my relationships, prepping for several upcoming summer trips, having a shameful amount of fun, making cool new friends. More good than not, but a LOT.
Yesterday, very abruptly, I reached… I wouldn't call it a "breaking point", but definitely an "enough is enough" point. I'm willing and able to work hard, but when I've reached my limit I'm like a donkey not a horse — I'll sit down and refuse to move rather than run until I drop dead. I was supposed to drive an hour after work for a class related to my job. Instead, I just… didn't.
As I sat in my kitchen, fretting on the phone with a friend about my inability to kick my own ass, my roommate gestured at me. When I got off the phone, he explained that he was going to an American Sign Language meet-up (he's currently taking an intro ASL class) at a bar up the street from us, and I should join him. This sounded like a good idea.
And WOW, was it ever. It was weirdly ideal. I got to be around other people and feel social without actually having to interact with anyone (since, y'know, I couldn't). It was completely calming.
After a drink and a half, I found myself unexpectedly turned on by the situation. Why would that be? Well.
NNtS calls me her bat, and That Guy has taken to calling me pet. I quite like both things! I'm not into the sorts of things that people generally associate with pet play, like the puppy and kitten stuff (it’s way cute but nah), but I definitely like the connotations that come with being a pet more than not. Being owned, and being on sort of a different/lesser plane than my owner. Being obedient, curling up at a person's feet. Ideally, also still being of use. That Guy jokingly suggested "bat-ler" as a way to refer to a bat servant (zomg, dorbs!). And when I brought up the idea of a pet-servant, especially a bat, being like a witch's familiar the other day, NNtS was totally tickled… very appropriate, as she owns a latex witch's hat and is a huge D&D nerd (bat familiars give a +3 to listen checks, as it turns out!) . :D
Anyway, pets, yes, that topic has been on my mind. So there I was, leaning tipsily against my roommate, surrounded by people communicating in a way I couldn't access, and it occurred to me that it was a bit like being an animal. I could get a sense of the emotional content of what people were conveying to each other if I paid attention, but their way of conveying it was completely foreign to me. It all moved very fast and I could get basically none of the meaning.
There were a bunch of people, including a very attractive couple right next to me, ignoring me as if I weren’t there. The only attention I got was when my roommate would turn and smile at me. He was also buying my drinks, he was very much in caretaker mode that night. It's funny how very comfortable it can be, to be so completely out of one's element that there's no hope of contributing. Nothing to do but relax, let it all wash over me, and be amused at my libido's reaction.

I had a good time trying a semi-challenging new hairstyle for my night out, and it stood up to an evening of hard dancing, and was even in decent shape when I woke up this morning :)
It was awesome to see Maria again, and dance with my bat, spinning her around by her jaw and stuff :)

What's cool in and around Tucson?
I’m going on a trip to Tucson, AZ for a week in July with no particular itinerary except to attend a friend’s wedding and then relax as much as possible. I’ll be staying at a hostel in the heart of the city and plan to do most of my exploring there, though I might rent a car for a day and go see the Grand Canyon.
Anyone wanna share recommendations on things to see, places to visit, cool eateries, kickass clubs, what-have-you? I’ll be looking at guidebooks too of course, but I’d much rather have personal recommendations. I’m interested in a wide range of things, so I’m really open to any ideas whatsoever. That said, art, plants, kinksters, and queers are a few of my particular interests.
I would be especially grateful to anyone who was willing to share this ask with friends-of-friends who might have thoughts! However, please be aware that the rest of my blog is NSFW, in case you decide to click through to any other posts.
